As part of a City Camp Raleigh competition, our group, OpenItUp, is attempting to make raw public school data information available to everyone in the community. We will present our progress at 3:00 p.m. today.
School report card data – test scores, teacher qualifications and demographics – is currently available on static web pages. The NC School Report Card website lists this information by school, but citizens wishing to compare multiple schools, see how a single school’s statistics have changed over time or find all schools meeting certain criteria would have to go through a laborious hunting process.
For $10 the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction provides a CD of all the raw data that goes into the report card website. We have a copy of this disk and are working to create some applications that give an idea how others might manipulate the data if access were easier.
